Operating Engineers Local 17- Buffalo, NY
Operating Engineers operate various types of heavy equipment such as bulldozers, loaders, graders, rollers, compactors, track and wheel type excavators, crawler, truck and tower cranes, concrete curb and gutter machines, pile drivers, brooms, tractors, backhoes, etc. Engineers use these and other types of equipment to perform a variety of tasks that include the construction of roads, bridges and buildings.
This is a four (4) year program with a minimum of
5,000 hours. The apprentice will receive 1000 hours
per year at the Training Site operating heavy
equipment and related studies in classroom and
shop. There is no pay while at the Training Site. This
program consists of one week of on-the-job training
when work is available. The apprentice is paid by the
contractor. The following week the apprentice is in
school training. The apprentice attends classes
Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., each
day of his/her school week. The wage an apprentice
will receive will be the current contracted rate. Each
apprentice will work for a contractor for approximately
400 hours, and then will change to a new contractor
in order to obtain diversified experience.
Requirements
You must be at least 18 years old.
• Have a high school diploma or GED.
• Take the Operating Engineers Local 17
Aptitude Test.
• Have a valid NYS CDL-A or B w/Air Brakes
drivers license and a means of transportation.
• You must be a citizen of the U.S.A. or legally
entitled to work here.
• Reside within Local 17’s jurisdiction, which
includes the counties of Erie, Wyoming,
Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Orleans, and the
Western part of Genesee (excluding Batavia).
