Diesel Mechanic
Qualifications – High School Diploma; Knowledge of DMV and DOT regulations pertaining to vehicle maintenance requirements. Minimum of three (3) years of experience maintaining diesel vehicles, buses, trucks, or commercial fleets. Experience repairing both diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles. Knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and NYSDOT vehicle inspection requirements. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computerized vehicle systems. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physically demanding work. Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills. Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple repairs. Valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License.
Work Authorization/Security Clearance – Authorized to work in the United States.
Summary/Objective - Responsible for preventative maintenance inspections on diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles. Responsible to maintain compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations and New York State vehicle inspection requirements respond to any emergency calls. Responsible to comply with DMV Article 19-A and Commissioner’s Regulations, agency policies, procedures and other items as assigned within the area of knowledge.
Essential Functions – Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Perform preventative maintenance inspections on diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles.
Conduct and document DOT, NYSDOT, agency-required vehicle inspections
Diagnose and repair engine, transmission, drivetrain, steering, suspension, brake, electrical, hydraulic, and fuel systems.
Diagnose and repair air brake systems.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours, weekend, and emergency fleet needs.
Assist in maintaining adequate parts inventory and fleet maintenance records.
Perform New York State inspections if appropriately certified.
Operate agency vehicles as required.
Diagnose and repair air brake systems.
Diagnose, service, and repair vehicle HVAC and air conditioning systems.
Perform wheelchair lift, ramp, and securement equipment inspections and repairs.
Complete work orders, maintenance records, and inspection reports accurately and timely.
Utilize diagnostic software and electronic testing equipment.

Travel – Travel for vehicle repairs or maintenance, may include leaving the county on occasion or for training opportunities.
Work Environment - Work is generally performed within an indoor garage and or outside when on callouts or emergency situations (parking lots, shuttle routes) in addition to some within an interior office environment, with frequent interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule. Work hours may vary and occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
